Milwaukee Employment Attorney

Katherine L. Charlton (“Kathy”) represents employees from the Milwaukee area and beyond in all aspects of their employment relationship, including negotiating employment agreements, non-competition agreements and other restrictive covenants, and severance and separation agreements. She has particular expertise and experience negotiating on behalf of employees in seemingly intractable employment situations. The employers with whom Charlton has negotiated and litigated range from Fortune 500 companies to small, closely-held corporations across nearly every industry.

Milwaukee Family Law Attorney

Charlton also represents people in a wide variety of family law matters, including divorcespost-divorce modifications of custodyplacementchild support, and maintenance. She is trained as a volunteer mediator in family law, and mediates a wide variety of matters. She serves as a mediator for the Family Court in Milwaukee County.

Milwaukee Fair Housing Attorney

Kathy Charlton has been the General Counsel for the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council for more than three decades. She has successfully litigated numerous fair housing discrimination claims in state and local administrative agencies, and in state and federal courts.

Experience

With more than three decades of experience representing individuals in private employment and family law matters, Kathy Charlton brings a broad base of expertise to her practice. She has litigated frequently in state and federal administrative agencies and courts, including the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Most of the matters Charlton handles involve negotiation of complex employment-related agreements, and complicated employment and family situations.

Charlton believes contributing to bar associations at the local and state levels is important. She has served in leadership roles for the State Bar of Wisconsin (Chair of the Legal Assistance and Gender Equity Committees; Board Member for the Individual Rights and Responsibilities Section), the Milwaukee Bar Association (Chair of the Labor and Employment Section), Legal Action of Wisconsin (Board Member), ACLU of Wisconsin (Board Member), the Collaborative Family Law Council of Wisconsin (Board Member and Southeastern Chapter Chair), and the Milwaukee Justice Center (current advisory board member). Charlton has received numerous local and state awards for her pro bono work.

Charlton and Madison office colleague Colin Good are the current Program Co-Chairs of the State Bar’s “Annual Employment Law Update,” a continuing education program for which they select topics, recruit speakers and serve as speakers themselves. Charlton is the author of two employment-law related chapters in the State Bar treatise, Wisconsin Employment Law. She participated in the State Bar’s inaugural Leadership Academy in 2016-2017, and is a Fellow of the Wisconsin Bar Foundation. She is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the Eastern and Western Federal District Courts, and the courts of the State of Wisconsin.
