Meaning of “Service Corporation Status”

Hawks Quindel, S.C. is a Service Corporation organized pursuant to Sec. 180.190 et seq. of the Wisconsin Statutes. Service Corporation status or other limited liability status generally exempts the owners of a law firm from personal responsibility for the firm’s liabilities. However, the Wisconsin Supreme Court rule allowing service corporation and other limited liability law firm organization requires the law firm to register each year and to maintain adequate professional liability insurance. The rule also states that the lawyer or lawyers performing the professional services are not relieved from personal liability for their own acts, errors, or omissions or for those of subordinates under their actual supervision and control.
