A high school student with a class 3 underbite sought approval for health insurance coverage so that she could undergo a double jaw surgery. UnitedHealthcare denied coverage for the requested services, claiming the member’s condition was not a congenital anomaly and that surgery was not medically necessary. The client filed an appeal and a hearing was held. On December 13, 2016, UnitedHealthcare reversed its decision and approved coverage for the surgery. The client estimates this will save her family $50,000. Attorney Danielle Schroder represented the insured.
