Milwaukee Divorce Attorney

Attorney Matt Ackmann helps parents in Southeastern Wisconsin through the sometimes difficult divorce process with sensitivity, professionalism and efficiency. In any Wisconsin divorce where the parties have minor children, the court must make or approve the decisions made by parents about the custody and placement of the children.

Custody

Custody involves major decision making for the wellbeing of a child, such as where the child will go to school, what kind of medical care the child will receive, and in what religion the child will be raised, if any. There is a presumption that both parents have the right to make these decisions, but the court may consider certain factors and order all or some decisions be made solely by one parent.

Placement

Placement determines where a child spends his or her days and nights. This can be primarily with one parent, or shared, either partially or equally, by the parents. Many considerations go into this decision, including:
  • the preferences of the parties and child,
  • the adjustment of the child to school and home,
  • the health of the parties and child, both physically and psychologically,
  • the history of child rearing,
  • the accommodations a parent makes to spend more time with the child, and
  • a history of domestic violence.
